FuturaGene’s Gene-Edited Eucalyptus Approved In Brazil

FuturaGene, Suzano’s biotech subsidiary, secured regulatory approval from Brazil’s CTNBio for its gene-edited eucalyptus, classifying it as a conventional organism under RN 16. Developed using CRISPR-Cas9, the edit optimises lignin composition to enhance wood quality, reduce chemical inputs, and lower energy use in pulping. No foreign DNA is introduced, making it akin to natural or conventional genetic variations. Following approval, controlled field trials will begin across Brazil under strict biosafety standards. This milestone adds to FuturaGene’s portfolio of 11 CTNBio-approved GM eucalyptus varieties, reinforcing its role as a global leader in sustainable, climate-adaptive tree biotechnology.
