Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has inaugurated its first silk processing plant, at Surendranagar in Gujarat, in a move that would help cut down the cost of production of silk yarn and increase the local availability of the raw material for Gujarati Patola sarees. Till now, Patola weavers had to source silk yarn from Karnataka and West Bengal. The plant has been set up by a khadi institution at a cost of Rs 75 lakh with Rs 60 lakh contribution from KVIC. The unit employs 90 local women. Cocoons will be brought from Karnataka and West Bengal and silk yarn will be processed in-house at the processing plant.
