The Manipur textile industry is slated to receive impetus from the Center following an assurance given by the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani that the state will get sustained support for the growth of the industry and welfare of the weaving community besides farmers.
Irani was speaking at the inaugural session of the three-day silk expo and workshop titled Silk Samagra. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and textiles, commerce and industries minister Th Biswajit were also present on the occasion. The event took place at the Manipur Sericulture Project Management Complex, Sangaipat in Imphal East district.
The Union minister disclosed that the government had already approved a proposal to set up Eri Spinning Mill worth INR 22 crore to help expand the silk industry in Manipur. Within a month’s time the foundation stone will be laid for the mill.
Irani referred to the union government’s Mudra Yojana which had benefited weavers and increased their income by 50 per cent. She said that the state government should proactively pass on the benefits of the schemes to the weavers. The minister hailed silk samagra as a golden opportunity created by the initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that will result in accelerating growth in the silk sector.
